Dark mode for GitHub in Chrome

These screenshots show a public GitHub repository page while logged out, not the signed-in dashboard. We haven't published screenshots of signed-in pages, so this page only describes what the repository page looks like.

GitHub before and after

Real screenshots of a public GitHub repository page (this project's own), logged out, taken with the extension. They are not mockups.

How to turn on dark mode for GitHub

  1. Add ThemeSwitcher to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store. It is free, and the side panel needs Chrome 114 or newer.
  2. Open github.com in a tab.
  3. Click the ThemeSwitcher icon in the toolbar to open the side panel.
  4. Choose Auto Engine and turn dark mode on. ThemeSwitcher remembers both for github.com. Alt+Shift+D toggles it from the keyboard.
  5. If something looks wrong, press Report this site as broken. It shows the domain it will send, and sends only after you press Send report.

What changes on GitHub

  • The white and light-grey page areas turn dark grey and the file list and About sidebar text turn light.
  • File names and commit messages keep a readable light colour, and blue links turn a lighter blue.
  • The black GitHub header was already dark and stays dark. The green Code button turns dark grey in this screenshot instead of keeping its green.
  • The author photo is a picture, so it keeps its original colours.

Frequently asked questions

Which ThemeSwitcher engine works best on GitHub?

The screenshots on this page were taken with the Auto engine, which picked its CSS mode on this page and recolors backgrounds and text by contrast. ThemeSwitcher remembers the engine you pick for github.com.

Does this work when I'm signed in?

We only published screenshots of a logged-out repository page, so we don't make claims about signed-in pages. You can try it by opening the side panel on your GitHub page and picking an engine. If something looks wrong, use Report this site as broken.

Does ThemeSwitcher see which repositories I open?

The page is recolored on your device. ThemeSwitcher never sends page addresses or page content. The optional usage report is off unless you turn it on and never includes sites. A broken-site report is sent only if you press Report this site as broken and confirm it, and it contains just the domain, engine, theme label and version.
